Maternal Mental Health

Hi, I’m Jillian. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and am privileged to be a part of the Nourish Lactation team. I offer short term support, typically 3 to 5 sessions to families that are already established at Nourish Lactation. Sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each mother and can be scheduled the same day as your existing Lactation or Physical Therapy appointment or as a stand alone appointment. Babies are welcome to join!

The experience of motherhood often includes anxiety, depression, or just needing extra support. I have been a parent and a therapist for nearly 20 years and have dedicated much of that time to specifically supporting new moms. I utilize strength based strategies with a focus on resilience, cognitive behavioral therapy, and training through Postpartum Support International in order to support the women I work with.

Having practiced in our community for 15 years, and previously working in Boston and Hawaii, I have learned the significance our mental health can have on our breastfeeding journey. The psychological effects of a difficult birth experience may manifest as anxiety, which can hinder a mother’s ability to feel connected and respond to feeding cues effectively.

I want all parents to understand that

The Baby Blues can affect up to 85% of us.

This period serves to support mothers by naturally limiting their ability to engage in other activities, prompting those around them to create a nurturing, relaxing, and supportive environment. It's a normal transition phase that can include emotional sensitivity, weepiness, and feeling overwhelmed. Fortunately, the Baby Blues often resolve without treatment within about three weeks.

It's important to note that more significant mental health issues can affect 10% to 15% of pregnant and postpartum women.

Key symptoms to watch for include:

  • Intense worry, irritability, anger, or unhappiness

  • A feeling of fogginess and difficulty completing tasks

  • Extreme mood swings

  • Trouble caring for oneself or the baby

  • A noticeable decline in interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

  • Changes in sleeping and eating patterns that aren't simply due to caring for the baby

Equally important is the role of partner support. A nurturing and understanding partner can help alleviate stress and create a more positive environment for breastfeeding. When partners are involved and attentive, they can provide emotional and practical support, which may enhance the mother’s confidence and ability to navigate the breastfeeding process. Understanding the interplay between these elements is essential for creating a holistic approach to lactation support. If you or your partner are experiencing these symptoms, it's crucial to seek support. I encourage open dialogue with a healthcare provider or reaching out to us for more support.

I am available to established patients at Nourish Lactation for ongoing support and guidance. If you have questions or need assistance regarding your breastfeeding journey. Schedule an appointment by calling Nourish Lactation at (541) 306-4299 or emailing greetings@nourishbend.com
